Chapter 4: Choosing A College To Attend Opportunity to play sports or participate in club activities: The Most Important Book on Campus: The College Catalog. CHOOSING GOOD BOOKS WHAT IS A GOOD BOOK? A book doesn’t have to win an award to be considered “good.” It doesn’t have to be a best seller or on a recommended booklist, either. A good book is simply one a child enjoys reading. HOW CAN YOU FIND GOOD BOOKS? Libraries, bookstores, and yard sales are filled with books. But how do you know.

Choosing a book independently teaches a child that we seek books for different reasons. With some simple strategies, you can help a child to be a savvy book selector. You also can help him or her choose books that are neither too easy nor too hard. The mission of the National Council for the Social Studies is to advocate and build capacity for high-quality social studies by providing leadership, services, and support to educators.
